EverQuest 2 introduces free-to-play option

Joining the ranks of Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online, Sony Online Entertainment has announced a free option of EverQuest 2.

The release of EverQuest 2 Entended will not replace the subscription model – Sony states the two will operate in parallel, so long-term paying players need not make the transition.

Sony Online Entertainment president, John Smedley, said in a release “Our goal with Extended is to offer players an alternative to out current subscription program that gives them the option to choose a program that best fits their play style.”

Below is the pricing breakdown for the new pay structure:

EverQuest 2 joins Turbine Studio’s Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online in trying to compete with Blizzard’s World of Warcraft by offering free servers for players to invest in at their leisure.
