Probably the strangest piece of news to come out of the PAX convention, but one that will at least silence the endless jokes – Duke Nukem Forever really is set for a 2011 release.
There’s a great piece over at Gamasutra about how developers, Gearbox Software, and publisher, 2KGames, ended up with the rights for the game, but essentially, the previous owner of the IP, 3D Reams, sold the property to Gearbox.
It will be interesting to see how the game actually turns out. Games in development that have suffered excessive delays rarely live up to the hype once the game is finally released (for example, Too Human), but Gearbox is a genuinely talented studio, with hits including games in the Half-Life franchise, Brothers in Arms, and Borderlands.
