Despite niche status in the West, the PSP continues to have very strong support in Japan, with two more games announced that are all-but guaranteed hits.
The first is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, a new instalment in the massively popular almost-MMO action series. Amusingly, the game might gain better traction outside of Japan this time around due to the success of Nintendo-published Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii.
The other is White Knight Chronicles, a budding franchise from Level-5, the developers behind Nintendo’s handheld scoop, Dragon Quest IX.
There are many who would wonder whether the PSP will have any competitive edge in the market at all come the release of the Nintendo 3DS, but those people would also forget that the PSP is still quite a powerful handheld console in its own right, and Sony is committed to improving it, inch by inch.
The only real issue is the relatively niche game releases that the PSP seems to excel in – games that don’t have the kind of mainstream appeal that sees Nintendo consoles dominate. It will be interesting to see if Sony is able to turn this around after all this time.
